Denver Completes its Rollout of Citywide Compost Service
New Sign-ups Encouraged as the Season of Yard Waste Approaches!
Denver – Spring’s around the corner and that means time to remove winter debris and dead grass from yards and gardens to prepare for new growth. Denver’s compost program is the perfect companion for the season, offering weekly collection that makes disposal of yard waste a breeze.
Compost is a service available to all Denver trash customers. This week, Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) completed its rollout of compost service to all areas of the city, 10 months earlier than planned. In implementing citywide compost service, Denver more than doubled the number of participants enrolled in the program from 30,000 to 70,000. Customers who missed a first opportunity to sign up for compost service can do so at any time at www.denvergov.org/utilitiesonline or by calling 311.
The expansion of compost is aimed at moving more quickly to further the city’s waste diversion and climate goals. About half of what Denver customers currently throw in their trash cart could be placed in their compost bins. Composting allows residents to dispose of food and yard waste sustainably, decreasing the amount of trash that goes to the landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Food scraps and yard debris collected through the City's compost program are processed into a soil amendment that can be used on farms, gardens, and landscapes. DOTI will host its annual compost and mulch giveaway for Denver residents on Saturday, May 3. More info is at www.denvergov.org/mulch.
DOTI would also like to remind customers that it is working more holidays in 2025, including the Cesar Chavez Day holiday on March 31. All Solid Waste Management services will be operating as normal that week, so customers should place carts out on their regular collection day.
Working holidays for the remainder of 2025 are:
- Cesar Chavez: Monday, March 31
- Juneteenth: Thursday, June 19
- Veterans Day: Tuesday, November 11
Solid Waste will observe the following holidays in 2025. Services will be delayed one day following the holiday for the remainder of those weeks:
- Memorial Day: Monday, May 26
- Independence Day: Friday, July 4
- Labor Day: Monday, September 1
- Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 27
- Christmas Day: Thursday, December 25
